It's specifically awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been wounded or killed in action due to enemy combatants while serving in the U.S. military. The Purple Heart is a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and service to one's country. It's one of the most recognized and respected military honors in the United States.
