National Yo-Yo Day is an annual event celebrated in the United States on June 6th. The day recognizes the enduring popularity of the yo-yo, a toy that has entertained people for centuries and has a rich history in skill and performance. National Yo-Yo Day commemorates the birthday of Donald F. Duncan Sr. (born June 6, 1892), an American entrepreneur who popularized the modern yo-yo by founding the Duncan Toy Company in the 20th century. While he didn't invent the yo-yo, his company made it a household name in the United States. The holiday was created in 1990 by Daniel Volk, a former National Yo-Yo Champion, to honor Duncan’s contributions and encourage the love of yo-yos. The yo-yo dates back to ancient Greece (circa 500 B.C.) and has appeared in many cultures. It consists of two disks connected by an axle, with a string looped around the axle. The modern yo-yo gained immense popularity in the US in the 20th century thanks to Duncan.
