National Peanut Butter Day

The history of peanut butter dates back to ancient civilizations in South America, where the peanut plant was first cultivated. The Incas were known to have ground peanuts into a paste-like substance, and the Aztecs made a similar peanut-based sauce. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that peanut butter as we know it today was invented in the United States. The first person to patent a method for making peanut butter was Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the founder of the Kellogg Company, in 1895. However, his version of peanut butter was not very popular due to its bland taste and gritty texture. The credit for popularizing peanut butter goes to George Washington Carver, a scientist and inventor who was born into slavery in the 1860s. Carver was a proponent of crop rotation and discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut plant, including peanut butter. He began promoting peanut butter as a nutritious and affordable food source for people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. In the early 1900s, several companies began mass-producing peanut butter, including J.H. Kellogg's Sanitas Nut Food Company (later renamed to Kellogg's Food Company), and the Rosefield Packing Company, which marketed its product as "Skippy" peanut butter. Today, peanut butter is a popular and widely consumed food in many countries around the world. It is enjoyed on its own, as a spread on bread or crackers, and is also used in a variety of recipes, from savory sauces to sweet desserts.
