October 26th
National Mincemeat Day

Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruits, spices, sugar, and sometimes beef suet that is traditionally used as a filling for pies and tarts. The term "mincemeat" originated in medieval times when the mixture contained actual meat, such as beef or mutton, along with the fruits and spices. However, modern mincemeat recipes no longer include meat and are typically vegetarian. The dried fruits commonly used in mincemeat include raisins, currants, and sultanas, along with candied orange and lemon peel. Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are also added to give the mixture its characteristic flavor. In addition, some recipes include brandy or other spirits to help preserve the mixture and enhance the flavor. Mincemeat pies and tarts are a traditional dessert during the holiday season in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States. The filling can also be used as a topping for ice cream or as a spread on toast.
