October 9th
National Leif Erikson Day

Leif Erikson was a Norse explorer from Iceland who is credited with being one of the first Europeans to reach North America, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Leif Erikson is believed to have been born in Iceland around 970 AD, the son of Erik the Red, a famous Norse explorer who founded the first settlement in Greenland. According to the Icelandic sagas, Leif Erikson sailed to the eastern coast of North America in around 1000 AD, where he established a settlement known as Vinland, which is believed to be located in present-day Newfoundland, Canada. Leif and his crew reportedly spent the winter in Vinland before returning to Greenland the following spring. Leif Erikson is celebrated as a hero in Scandinavian countries, particularly in Norway, where October 9th is recognized as Leif Erikson Day. The day commemorates the anniversary of the arrival of the ship Restauration, which sailed from Norway to the United States in 1825 and is considered to be the first organized immigration from Norway to America.
