Lame duck refers to an official's final period of office, after the election of a successor. National Lame Duck Day recognizes the ratification of the 20th Amendment to the United States Constitution also known as the Lame Duck Amendment. The 20th amendment moved the beginning and ending of the terms of the president and vice president from March 4 to January 20, and of members of Congress from March 4 to January 3.
