Bourbon is a type of American whiskey that is made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn, along with other grains such as wheat, rye, or barley. It is a distilled spirit that is aged in charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years, giving it a distinctive flavor and color. Bourbon whiskey originated in Kentucky in the late 18th century and has since become a popular and widely recognized type of whiskey worldwide. It is known for its sweet and smoky flavor, with hints of vanilla, caramel, and oak. The aging process in charred oak barrels also gives bourbon its distinctive amber color. In order to be considered bourbon, the whiskey must be produced in the United States, made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn, and aged in new, charred oak barrels. It must also be distilled to no more than 80% alcohol by volume, and bottled at no less than 40% alcohol by volume. Bourbon can be enjoyed on its own, over ice, or mixed into cocktails. Some popular bourbon-based cocktails include the Old Fashioned, the Manhattan, and the Mint Julep.
