National Adoption Month is observed during the month of November every year to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and to celebrate families who have grown through adoption. The observance was originally established in 1976 by the Children's Bureau, a federal agency that is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. National Adoption Month aims to promote adoption as a positive option for children who are in need of loving and permanent homes. The observance provides an opportunity to recognize the many different types of families who adopt, including single parents, same-sex couples, and families who adopt children of different races and ethnicities. Throughout the month of November, adoption agencies, social service organizations, and other groups that support adoption hold events and activities to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and to provide information and resources to families who are considering adoption. These events may include adoption fairs, workshops, and training sessions for prospective adoptive parents, as well as activities to celebrate adoptive families and their children.
