Loomis Day

Loomis Day commemorates Mahlon Loomis, an American dentist and inventor who claimed to have developed a method of wireless communication nearly two decades before the discovery of radio. In the 1860s and 1870s, Loomis conducted a series of experiments using kites and balloons to transmit telegraph signals wirelessly over long distances. He believed that the Earth's atmosphere could serve as a conductor of electricity, allowing telegraph signals to be transmitted without wires. Loomis filed several patents for his wireless telegraphy system, but was unable to commercialize it. While he was not able to conclusively prove his claims, Loomis is recognized as an early pioneer in the development of wireless communication.
